RULE REMINDER -

NFHS Rule 9, Section 8 – Noncontact Unsportsmanlike Conduct by Nonplayers The rule states: No coach, substitute, athletic trainer, or other team attendant shall act in an unsportsmanlike manner once the game officials assume authority for the game. This includes (but not limited to):
  • Using profanity or insulting language
  • Attempting to influence a decision by a game official
  • Disrespectfully addressing a game official
  • Indicating objections to a game official's decision
  • Being on the field except as a substitute player
  • Being outside the team box but not on the field
The NFHS also disapproves of conduct intended to embarrass, ridicule, or demean another person. We expect that same standard of conduct within the INFC.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR OUR COACHES -

We have asked our officials to be more proactive and consistent in addressing inappropriate sideline behavior. The intent is not to create more penalties or eject more coaches. Quite the opposite. The objective is to establish expectations early so that situations do not escalate. Our requested approach is:

First offense – Warning - The official should address the behavior, bring the head coach to the numbers for a brief conference, identify the rule violation, explain the expectations and consequences of additional violations, and treat the incident as a warning.

Second offense – Penalty - If the behavior continues, the official should again address the head coach, explain the violation and enforce the applicable penalty.

Third offense - EJECTION - If the behavior continues to the point that a second unsportsmanlike foul is warranted, the appropriate consequences—including ejection—will be enforced.
